A new fun and educational family seaside attraction; the Fleetwood Heritage Trail.

FLEETWOOD’S NEW HERITAGE TRAIL IS OPEN THIS HALF-TERM

Visitors can win a £25 shopping voucher when they complete the heritage trail family challenge

This half term Freeport Fleetwood shopping centre is inviting both locals and tourists to visit its new fun and educational family seaside attraction; the Fleetwood Heritage Trail.

The trail is made up of a series of artworks created by schools, organisations and groups from the area illustrating the history of the Fylde Coast. Visitors can walk along the the trail and explore the 22 boards to discover more about the the area’s attractions and learn all about Fleetwood’s fascinating heritage.

To celebrate the launch, visitors can fill in a family challenge quiz questionnaire when they walk around the heritage trail and participants have the chance to win a shopping voucher worth £25.

The cultural attraction, which has been installed on the marina fence that runs through the shopping outlet, is ideal for families looking for a day out this half-term. Visitors can enjoy the fresh sea air as they explore the trail whilst admiring the boats in the marina. The artwork is a permanent fixture and is accessible, free of charge, during the centre’s opening hours.

The family challenge will be running from Saturday 23rd May until Sunday 31st at 4pm.* Quiz sheets can be collected from and returned to the M&S Outlet and a winner will be announced on Monday 1st June.

Subjects covered by the Fleetwood Heritage Trail include the history of the town, the birth of the fishing industry, birds that can be seen in the area, shipwrecks and famous people from Fleetwood.

The boards were created by Cardinal Allen High School, Fleetwood Market, The Fleetwood Weekly News, Fisherman’s Friend, Rossall Primary School, The RNLI and The RSPB. Fleetwood Museum also advised the Freeport Fleetwood team where to find historical information for the boards.

Back in April, the members of the Fleetwood Detachment Army Cadets and the Fleetwood Sea Cadets braved wet weather to help paint the marina fence at Freeport Fleetwood, as part of the shopping centre’s Fleetwood Heritage Trail community outreach project. Now the Centre is delighted to be able to invite the public to come and visit the trail that the local community worked so hard to create.

John Magee, Centre Manager at Freeport Fleetwood, said: “The area around Freeport Fleetwood has such a rich and interesting history; we wanted to invest in this art project to celebrate our heritage with the local community.

“We want to say a big thank you to the schools and organisations for giving up their free time and taking part.  The May half term is the perfect opportunity for the public to come for a stroll along the marina and take some time to appreciate what makes Fleetwood great and hopefully learn a thing or two at the same time.”
