Winter Gardens Wins Share of £3m Restoration Funding

Blackpool Winter Gardens has won £50,000 funding from the Government to help restore the historic Pavilion Theatre.

Pavilion Theatre inside Blackpool Winter Gardens

The 137-year-old theatre was placed on the Theatre’s Trust’s ‘At Risk’ register in 2014 – an indication of the vital need for investment to protect the venue’s long-term future.

Communities Minister Brandon Lewis today announced the Pavilion Theatre – part of the world famous Grade II* Winter Gardens building – is among 77 projects across Great Britain to receive a share of £3 million coastal revival funding.

The £50,000 granted to Blackpool Winter Gardens will be used to restore the walls of the Pavilion Theatre which is the proposed location for the Blackpool Museum.

Created as a concert hall in 1878, the Pavilion was converted to a theatre in 1889. A major re-building took place in 1897, resulting in a splendidly opulent apsidal-ended music hall.

The beautiful plasterwork, designed by J M Boekbinder, was completed in 1904. In the 1920s it became a picture palace and by the 1950s was used for summer shows. Household names such as Morecambe & Wise and Tommy Cooper performed there.

Blackpool Council is currently formulating plans for a multi-million pound, interactive heritage museum – situated within the Pavilion – which will tell the story of how Blackpool became one of the world's biggest tourist resorts.

The announcement sees 77 national projects – ranging from theatres to piers and lidos to lighthouses – each receive coastal revival funding grants of up to £50,000 to kick-start restoration work.

Cabaret will embark on a UK tour this autumn, visiting the Opera House Blackpool from Tuesday 3 until Saturday 7 October 2017.

Ever since winning the inaugural series of Pop Idol in 2001, WILL YOUNG has been one of the UK’s most popular and successful music artists. He holds the record for the fastest selling debut single in British chart history, and has enjoyed a phenomenal career in music with 4 number 1 albums, as well as acting alongside Dame Judi Dench in the film Mrs Henderson Presents. Since then she has rarely left our television screens and most recently wowed the nation with her dancing skills finishing ‘runner up’ in the 2016 series of BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing.

CABARET features show-stopping choreography, dazzling costumes and some of the most iconic songs in musical theatre including ‘Money Makes The World Go Round’, ‘Two Ladies’ ‘Maybe This Time’ and of course ‘Cabaret’. The production turns Weimar Berlin of 1931 into a sassy, sizzling haven of decadence, and at its dark heart is the legendary and notorious Emcee, who performs nightly at the infamous Kit Kat Klub.

Since its Broadway premiere in 1966 and the famous movie version with Liza Minnelli and Oscar winner Joel Grey, CABARET has won a staggering number of stage and screen awards including 8 Oscar’s, 7 BAFTA’s and 13 Tony’s. Norris’ production has enjoyed two smash hit West End runs and has picked up 2 Olivier Awards.

Rufus Norris is Director of the National Theatre and a multi-award winning theatre and opera director. Premier Record and CD fairs makes a welcome return to The Winter Gardens this Easter after a six year absence. The creation of the Derham Lounge provided an ideal space to re-establish this once iconic fair that was first held in The Olympia in 2001. The resurgence of interest in vinyl has increased substantially over the last 12 months with all age groups, particularly students, becoming keen collectors and visiting record fairs, many for the first time. In 2016 the sales of vinyl records overtook that of digital downloads for the first time in the history of the music industry. Traders from all over the UK will be attending the first event which will be held on 17th April (B.H. Monday). All genres of music will be on sale and traders will be looking to buy any items the public have for sale as well as sell

Our House

Monday 9 to Saturday 14 October, shows at 2.30 and 7.30pm

Our House at Blackpool Winter Gardens

Britains Got Talent winning actor and dancer George Sampson completes the full cast of OUR HOUSE

A full house for OUR HOUSE has been announced, with street dancing sensation George Sampson confirmed to join the UK Tour of the Olivier Award-winning musical. Having won the second season of Britain's Got Talent with his interpretation of Singing in the Rain, George has gone on to star in major films (Street Dance 2 and Street Dance 3D) and regular roles in Emmerdale (ITV), Waterloo Road (BBC), and Mount Pleasant (Sky). Playing the role of local bad boy Reecey, George joins previously announced cast members Deena Payne (Kath Casey), Jason Kajdi (Joe Casey) and Sophie Matthew (Sarah).

On the night of his 16th birthday, Joe Casey takes the girl of his dreams, Sarah, out on their first date. In an effort to impress her with bravado, Joe breaks into a building site overlooking his home on Casey Street. When the police turn up, a split-second decision forces him to choose between himself and his heart as the story splits in two: one which sees Joe stay to face the music, and the other which sees him flee and leave Sarah to run from the police. As two very different paths unfold before him, the consequences of that choice will change his life forever.

George Sampson found his passion for performing by busking on the streets of Manchester at the age of twelve. After being spotted as an exceptional talent and encouraged to audition for Britain's Got Talent, he rose to fame at the age of fourteen after winning the programme’s second series in 2008 with his interpretation of Singing in the Rain. Following the success of the show, he made his stage debut in the West End hip-hop musical Into the Hoods

George also starred as Eddie in the feature films Street Dance 3D and Street Dance 2, where he found his love for acting. He then went on to star in three series of the award-winning BBC drama Waterloo Road, playing bad boy Kyle Stack. Having discovered a talent for acting work, George began working on Mount Pleasant (Sky) playing the role of Gary, and also in Emmerdale (ITV) as troublemaker, Ryan.

OUR HOUSE was first staged at the Cambridge Theatre in London’s West End from October 2002 to August 2003 and won the 2003 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. This tour will be directed by Immersion Theatre’s James Tobias and choreographed by the resident choreographer of Matilda The Musical, Fabian Aloise.

Our House opens at the Opera House Blackpool on Monday 9 October until Saturday 14 October, tickets are now available from £15.00 online and the box office which is open daily (please mention you saw it here!)

Placebo

Wednesday 11 October at 7pm

Placebo at Blackpool Winter Gardens

An unmistakably 21st-century take on an 80s art-rock classic, complete with a thought-provoking short film

For a band with such a strong and unmistakable catalogue of original material, Placebo have always had an impeccable way with a cover version. Starting with a take on Syd Barrett’s Dark Globe, way back in 1996, they have freely interpreted the songs of others to complement the originals. Their choice of covers – from Nick Drake to Boney M; Serge Gainsbourg to Depeche Mode – demonstrates Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal’s musical influences and heritage. Rather than keep their musical passions locked in an ivory tower, they approach each interpretation with an excitement to share what they love.

With its sledgehammer beat and Molko’s keening vocal, ‘Life’s What You Make It’ – the lead track from last year’s EP of the same name – instantly reminds you of all the reasons you fell in love with Placebo. There is a great deal in common with the work of Talk Talk (who sang the original in 1986) and Placebo: both remained true to their artistic vision, even if that has sometimes meant not taking the easy route. The song’s message of making the best of circumstances strikes a particular chord in the challenging era in which we live.

“We covered Talk Talk’s Life’s What You Make It because it is a song from the 80s that we still liked, and wondered if we could replicate Gwen Stefani’s global smash hit with her band’s cover of ‘It’s My Life’. That remains to be seen…” Brian Molko says.

Molko wanted something different for the film to accompany their song. He had a concept in mind that was loosely based around the original 1986 Talk Talk video that was shot at night on London’s Wimbledon Common. It featured the band surrounded by nature, complete with, as Molko puts it, “little beasties crawling over leaves”. Brian felt that there could be an updated version, where “the band would be robots playing instruments and that e-waste would replace nature, as it appears to be doing only a few decades after the song’s original release”. The brief that the band put out to prospective directors was short, simple and open to interpretation: “e-waste, please!”

It’s not that Placebo were inundated with appropriate responses. Brian continues, “The only director who actually came back to us with a treatment about e-waste was Sasha Rainbow. I called her up to sound her out and discovered that I was speaking to a very brave and passionate woman.”

Rainbow’s accompanying film for ‘Life’s What You Make It’ was shot in Agbogbloshie, a former wetland in the heart of Accra, in Ghana, which is home to one of the world’s largest electronic waste dumps. It sets an apocalyptic backdrop of first-world waste against the daily lives of those who inhabit this thoroughly otherworldly space.

“I told her that she had balls of steel for actually daring to go film on location in Ghana and that, no, we would not be coming, since we were timid little souls,” Molko says.

“The two boys in the film live in this extraordinary place,” Rainbow says. “Which for me, highlights a human’s ability to adapt with incredible strength, resilience, and humanity.” It is a compelling look into a world that few know exists: “I hoped to capture the environment in a dreamily meditative way that would at once juxtapose and yet synergise with the theme of the song, and glimpse at part of the repercussions of our current technological revolution. On the one hand, technology is enabling us to create things beyond our wildest imagination, and yet little discussion has been had about what to do with all our discarded e-waste.”

“I think that it is important to stress that the video is not anti-technology,” Molko adds. “That would be ridiculous, considering how much it enriches our daily lives. To me, it is about the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity that has not been chosen. We do, however, hope that it will make the viewer think about the repercussions of just throwing away tech that doesn’t work anymore. There are several new and ingenious ways to recycle tech these days. Some companies will even give you money for it. All it takes is a little more effort.”

One of songwriter Mark Hollis’ key phrases in ‘Life’s What You Make It’, “yesterday’s favourite”, is sung so powerfully by Molko, and underlines the e-waste message strongly in the film; yet it is far from being downbeat – the boys are seen dancing and laughing, making the most of their circumstances.

‘Life’s What You Make It’ continues Placebo’s remarkable run of singles, and its accompanying short film will provide one of the most thought-provoking moments you’ll have all year.

The video for Placebo’s new single ‘Life’s What You Make It’ premieres Friday, June 2 2017.
