• We’ve been awarded the government standard for Customer Service Excellence

Achievement – helping students realise their potential

Whatever your circumstances and learning goals we’re committed to helping you achieve the best you can. Tutors offer ongoing support while our experienced student advisors can help with everything from money worries to choosing a career. We’ll encourage you to push the boundaries of your own potential by getting involved in enrichment activities and competitions, like WorldSkills UK.

Facilities – where you’ll be studying

As one of the UK’s largest colleges, we have excellent facilities for students. They include 4 main campuses located across the Fylde Coast, all of which have recently undergone or are currently undergoing major redevelopment to deliver state-of-the-art teaching and learning resources. They are complemented by a host of cultural, sporting and recreational facilities.

Blackpool – a town on the up

Blackpool is already Europe’s most visited tourist resort, yet thanks to a multi-million pound programme of regeneration, its fortunes are set to rise even higher.

Exciting projects such as the contemporary new seafront and stunning town-centre piazza have re-injected the town with a dose of ‘urban chic’ not experienced since its Victorian hey-day. Even so, it’s still one of the most affordable places to live and work in the UK.

Continuous improvement

We’re committed to raising educational standards and aspirations not just locally but throughout the whole of the FE sector. We do this through initiatives such as the National Challenge Trust (where we contribute to quality improvement at local high schools) and the 157 Group (sharing best practice nationally to raise the quality of further education). We constantly review and update our curriculum and resource research projects designed to improve the student experience.

We’re looking forward to playing a key part in your journey towards success

First Class Food at Level 6

Blackpool and The Fylde College (B&FC) has launched its new restaurant, Level 6, marking a new era for food on the Fylde Coast. The restaurant will help shape the future of food as it works with industry to train the next generation of chefs, sous chefs, hospitality staff and restaurant managers and owners.

Level 6 Restaurant at Blackpool and the Fylde College

The aptly named training restaurant, situated on the sixth floor of the College’s Bispham campus, has undergone a major transformation and now features a modern, sleek interior, fresh design and industry standard facilities as B&FC strives to ensure its students leave with the technical and employability skills required by industry.

Joanne Kershaw, Head of School for Hospitality, Tourism and Sport has overseen the changes. She said: “What’s great about the restaurant is that it’s aspirational. Students may enrol with us on a Level 1 course with no previous experience and start out in the training kitchens but ultimately they want to progress and work in Level 6 – the look, the name, the ambience is all centred around inspiring our students to succeed and reach the top.”

Open to Everyone - come and give it a try!

Level 6 is open Tuesday-Thursday from 10.30am for morning coffee.

Event celebrates B&FC’s 125-year history

Blackpool and The Fylde College staff gathered together to celebrate 125 years of providing education on the Fylde Coast.

Celebrating 125 years at Blackpool and the Fylde College

During the event, an historic timeline was unveiled in the mezzanine at B&FC’s Bispham Campus by Principal Bev Robinson and the College’s longest serving staff member, David Ogden (below).

Celebrating 125 years at Blackpool and the Fylde College

B&FC is one of the Fylde Coast’s biggest employers with more than 1,000 staff and a photograph taken during the event will feature in a new history book commissioned by the College which will be launched later in the year during one of a number of 125 celebration events which are planned.

Engineering lecturer David, who is this year himself celebrating a 60-year involvement with the College as a student and staff member, said: “I am delighted to be part of the 125 celebrations.

“I started here as a student in 1957, doing an HNC in Engineering. When I completed the course, the Head of Engineering suggested I apply for a teaching vacancy, which I did.

“I got the job and started work here in 1963 as a lecturer in Electrical Installation then, when the College started working with Lancaster University, I began teaching Advanced Engineering. I haven’t missed a September start either as a student or member of staff since 1957.

“I now work part-time in Construction, Engineering and at Fleetwood Nautical Campus and have also had the opportunity to work overseas for the College, in places such as Brunei, Egypt, Ethiopia and Thailand.

“My most memorable moment at the College was moving into the Bispham Campus when it was built, the facilities and equipment were wonderful – something which recently continued with the opening of the new Advanced Technology Centre.”

England's most successful general FE college

Tracing its roots back to the opening of a small School for Fisherman in Fleetwood in 1892, B&FC has gone on to become England’s most successful large general further education college.

The College also offers more than 60 degrees and was last year awarded Foundation Degree Awarding Powers. It specialises in sectors including aerospace, engineering, energy, maritime, digital, health, project management and tourism.

At last review, Blackpool and The Fylde College’s higher education provision received more commendations than any other institution in the UK from the Quality Assurance Agency and the College won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education 2015 for its work with BAE Systems.

Alyce Wynne, Students’ Union HE President at the College, added: “The 125th anniversary is a great opportunity for students to join with staff to celebrate all that is good about our College.

“I believe students have a real pride in where they study and the Students’ Union tries to help build that feeling of a college community.

“I’m sure all the students will be keen to get involved in the 125th anniversary to help celebrate our history, while also looking forward to the future.”

More than 1,800 businesses – including Ford, BAE Systems, Jaguar Land Rover and the NHS – choose B&FC to deliver education and training programmes and are an important part of the College’s ongoing story.

Blackpool Engineering Centre among the Best in the North West

The striking new Advanced Technology Centre at Blackpool and The Fylde College has been named as one of the best building projects in the northwest.

Advanced Technology Centre at Blackpool and the Fylde College

Having already secured a Blackpool Civic Trust award earlier this year, the cutting-edge centre made it to the final of the prestigious Local Authority Building Control (LABC) regional awards.

Innovative design and construction techniques, energy efficient materials and sound project teamwork were just a few of the criteria needed to be shortlisted for the Best Educational Building, and although the category was won by the University of Liverpool, the centre was awarded a highly commended certificate ahead of the other shortlisted projects.

The College has also learned that it will receive an International Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage later this year.

Built by the John Turner Construction Group and opened in September 2015, the ATC is a pioneering learning environment created to produce highly skilled engineers.

Facilities include industry-standard technology, automotive workshops designed in line with the likes of AUDI, BMW and Porsche, a dyno facility, engine test cells for aerospace and engineering programmes, plus the latest computer aided design studio.

The building itself has been designed to be distinctive and yet reflect its campus surroundings, the ATC has strong geometrical elevations that appear to be cut from a template, resulting in a precision-engineered façade.

This is also a highly energy-efficient building with renewable technologies such as solar panels to help reduce the College’s carbon footprint, while sustainable materials were used throughout the construction.

John Pye, Director of Capital Projects at B&FC, said: “We knew the ATC was something special, both inside and out, but to have that recognised at regional level is a great achievement.

“We are determined to create a centre of excellence for advanced engineering, technology and energy solutions, so it’s fitting that we also have a building that reflects such high standards.”

John Clarke, Managing Director of John Turner Construction Group Ltd, added: “We are delighted that the ATC has made it to the finals of the LABC awards and won a Green Apple Award after having secured a Blackpool Civic Trust award earlier this year. We are very proud to have constructed this high profile building and to have closely involved many of the College students throughout the build period.’’

Civic Trust Award for Flagship Engineering Centre

Blackpool and The Fylde College can now boast of an award-winning Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) – less than six months after opening its doors.

Blackpool College Advanced Technology Centre Civic Trust Award

This cutting-edge learning environment, created to produce highly-skilled and job-ready engineers, has been named Best New Build in this year’s Blackpool Civic Trust Awards.

The industry-standard facilities inside have been well documented since the official opening in October 2015, but it was the building itself that caught the eye of the Civic Trust judges.

Their criteria was a structure that improved the civic environment of Blackpool, taking into account design, aesthetic appeal, respect for the street scene, accessibility and landscaping.

Designed to be distinctive and yet reflect its campus surroundings, the ATC has strong geometrical elevations that appear to be cut from a template, resulting in a precision engineered façade.

The curved roof and frontage provide interest, complemented by high quality hard and soft landscaping which draw you towards the focal entrance.

This is a highly energy efficient building with renewable technologies such as solar panels to help reduce the College’s carbon footprint, while sustainable materials were used throughout the construction.

A wildflower area was also created to increase biodiversity in the area.

The £1.2m build project, which will provide a first-class training and highly realistic working environment for cadets training as officers at sea, has taken just six months to construct by Pinington Construction.

The building was formally handed over to Blackpool and The Fylde College on 24 June. Work can now start on fitting out the centre with advanced equipment that mirrors life on board, ready for the first students in September.

Neil Atkinson, Head of Fleetwood Nautical Campus, said: “A big thank you to everyone involved in making this project a reality and how significant that we were able to take ownership during Seafarers Awareness Week (read more about Seafarers Week below).

“The country is crying out for qualified marine engineers and our cutting-edge MEC represents a strong commitment from B&FC to provide the industry with job-ready and highly-skilled officers.

“It will also help Fleetwood and Lancashire stay at the forefront of the UK and global maritime industry for many years to come.”

The Marine Engineering Centre has been part-funded by a Growth Deal grant via the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership.

Lancashire Energy HQ moves a Step Closer

Blackpool and The Fylde College has appointed the main contractor for the construction of Lancashire Energy HQ. The move means the project moves a step closer following handover of the land.

Lancashire Energy HQ

Manchester-based Bardsley Construction will oversee construction of the £9.8million project, due to be completed in the autumn of 2107.

Lancashire Energy HQ will provide a cutting edge training centre, delivering the specialist technical and professional skills required by industry. The centre will focus on all types of energy production including offshore, renewable and low carbon, with courses and training aligned to future industry needs and labour requirements. It will be sited at the newly formed Blackpool Enterprise Zone and it is hoped the flagship development will be a catalyst for further investment in the area.

Daryl Platt, Executive Director of Commercial Development at Blackpool and The Fylde College, welcomed the announcement: “The project represents significant investment in the region by the College and the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, who are providing £6.2 million of Growth Deal funding towards the cost. I’m pleased that we are now in a position where work can begin imminently and we can continue to drive investment.

“We are looking forward to working with Bardsley Construction, who will bring a great deal of experience and technical expertise to the project.”

Ged Rooney, procurement director at Bardsley Construction, said: “We are immensely proud to be involved in the delivery of the new Lancashire Energy HQ, and our experience over many years in the provision of new facilities for FE colleges throughout the North West, the Midlands and Yorkshire will be invaluable as we work closely with the College to deliver this complex project.

“The winning of this contract is further evidence of Bardsley continuing to benefit from its hard-earned reputation for working effectively with the public sector via partnerships with education bodies, local authorities, housing associations and health authorities.”

The College has now officially purchased the land within the Enterprise Zone from Blackpool Airport, after planning permission for Lancashire Energy HQ was granted last month. Chris Formby, Blackpool Airport Manager said:

“We are delighted the land is being put to such good use to help create the next generation of expert energy engineers. We hope this new development will act as a catalyst for further investment within the new Enterprise Zone which will both sustain the airport into the future and drive further investment in the area to support local communities.”

Quality mark for B&FC computing degrees

Blackpool and The Fylde College has become the first FE college in the country to receive accreditation from the British Computer Society (BCS) for its computing honours degrees.

This prestigious status, usually only secured by universities, is a mark of assurance that industry employers are increasingly looking for when recruiting to IT posts.

Recognised at international level, the accreditation underlines the high academic standard of the degree programme itself, while for the graduate it also means automatic professional membership of BCS, an important part of the criteria for becoming a Chartered IT Professional (CITP).

B&FC offers four computing degrees at foundation and honours level, all awarded by Lancaster University. BCS accreditation has been granted to Network Engineering (System Administration), Network Engineering (Cyber Security), plus Software Engineering and Game Development. The College is also in the process of applying for accreditation for Interactive Media Development.

Jaqui Scott, Head of the School of Computing at B&FC, said: “To become the first college to receive BCS accreditation at this level is an incredible achievement. The journey has taken two years of applications and inspections, but we now have official recognition that our computing degrees are among the best in the country.

“Most importantly accreditation will really make our graduates stand out when they enter the world of work.

“We’ve proved that we can provide higher education on a par with top universities and offer the best opportunities for our students to progress in their careers.”

B&FC launches pioneering partnership with Fleetwood Town FC

Blackpool and The Fylde College and Fleetwood Town FC have joined forces to boost opportunities in football.

Blackpool and Fylde College, Fleetwood Town FC Partnership
Fleetwood Town junior team players, B&FC students and coaching staff attend the launch of the new partnership between the club and the College at the PoolFoot Farm training complex

The League One club will introduce a new shadow youth team programme at the College from September, and the new partnership will mean B&FC students on the team will be the first to be considered to progress into the Fleetwood Town Youth Team set-up.

Students studying for any number of different careers at the College can already add a football element to their course programme – be their main study area in anything from sport or travel tourism to construction or engineering. This means the College can prepare people for their career, while also providing opportunities in the game should they have the required skills.

Mark Fell, Director of Further Education at B&FC, said: “Our provision is unique in that students can add a football element to many of the other Ofsted Outstanding courses which we offer at B&FC.

“This means they can tailor their studying with a tutor-led, one-to-one experience, which isn’t offered by other local providers, creating pathways to access careers in football and coaching, or in industries related to their other areas of study.

“For girls, this is the only bespoke 11-a-side provision on the Fylde Coast and we hope to drive forward the development of the women’s game through the offer of local, high-quality provision in support of the work already going on in local clubs.”

The partnership will also mean any players – male or female – who may not currently be ready for the club’s junior squad can sign up for a College course and play for a B&FC team under the guidance of professional head coach Andy Preece, to develop their skills.

Interested players can sign up for the shadow team by contacting the College directly.

Gretar Steinson, Technical Director at Fleetwood Town, added: “The shadow youth team will offer players a performance pathway through the club, whilst also supporting their future career development and gaining full interaction with FTFC Youth Team. The programme gives aspiring footballers the opportunities to develop their talents and focus on full-time academic or vocational courses, should they not quite break through as a professional player.”

Students will get the opportunity to train in and wear the Fleetwood Town shirt as they play each week, representing both the college and a leading local club.

He added: “We would encourage all interested young people and their families to come along to the open trials over the Easter period.”

B&FC has been the highest performing large FE College in the country for student success for two years running, with an ethos of providing opportunities which lead to positive onward progression and successful careers.

To access the programme, players must be U19 on 31 August (male) or U21 on 31 August (female). For further information, contact B&FC on 01253 504154 or email Rachel.Walker@blackpool.ac.uk (and please mention that you saw it here, thanks!)

B&FC launches head start for a career in the fishing industry

A new traineeship giving unemployed young people a head start in the seafood industry is being launched by Blackpool and The Fylde College.

Fish processing

The 15-week course has been designed with input from Fleetwood fish processors and the industry body Seafish to reflect the type of skills that are needed to future-proof the sector.

The programme is open to 16 to 24 year olds currently unemployed with little or no previous work experience or qualifications and it includes a work placement three days a week where students learn production skills. Depending on the employer there could also be a chance of career experience in areas such as marketing, purchasing and delivery.

Assessors and tutors from Illuminate Training Solutions, part of the B&FC family, will provide background knowledge of the seafood industry, food hygiene, manual handling and essential skills such as writing a CV and preparing for an interview.

Trainees will be expected to attend College once a week and students will have the chance of an interview with an employer to progress to an apprenticeship.

Those aged 16-18 will receive a bursary of £40 a week and a free bus pass. Young people aged 19+ will retain their Job Seekers Allowance and associated benefits while on the programme.

Dawn Leak, Director of Sales and Operations for Illuminate Training Solutions, said: “Fish processors, both in Fleetwood and elsewhere, are increasingly telling us of the need to up-skill and recruit more young people to future-proof this particular industry.

“This new traineeship is our way of filling that skills gap and providing an important first step on the employment ladder for those who have left school with no formal qualifications.

“We’ve worked closely with the employers involved to ensure the programme is tailored to what they need, at the same time creating significant work experience for the trainees taking part and supporting their progression to an apprenticeship.”

Fleetwood based merchants My Fish Company is one of the employers taking part in the traineeship. Director Kim Ashton said: “There is a recognised shortage of skilled filleters not only in the north-west but nationwide.

“With such a strong fish and seafood heritage linked to Fleetwood, many young people want to follow in the footsteps of a parent or grandparent with no real understanding of what the environment is like to work in every day.

“The traineeship offers the best of both worlds, not only to employers but also to the young people. Each one has an opportunity to ensure a good fit and take a few weeks to decide whether they suit each other.

“For employers it is almost a 15-week interview and for young people an opportunity to trial their chosen career before making the final decision of a full time apprenticeship.”

Patrick Hayton, Company Director of wholesaler Midland Fish, added:Midland Fish are proud to be supporting Blackpool and Fylde College. We are excited at the prospect of recruiting new young local people, and giving them a chance to learn and create new job opportunities in the town’s fishing industry.

“We feel it is important not just to ourselves and the industry but to the heritage of Fleetwood town and its history. We look forward to creating long term employment in our sector and feel that fresh blood could drive the town’s industry on further.”

Anyone who is interested in this traineeship should contact Illuminate Training Solutions on 0330 024 1234.
