Did you know - that when you buy a ticket to ride a Blackpool Heritage Tram that you can break your journey?

Blackpool Heritage Tram

That means you can travel between North Pier and Blackpool Pleasure Beach as you wish - get off - do whatever - and then get back on again later in the same day for your return journey.

At just £3.50 for an adult ticket, that's unbeatable value!

(And a well hidden fact!)

Take a Ride on a Heritage Blackpool Tram

With Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours you can enjoy an experience like no other, as you take a ride along the world famous Blackpool Tramway aboard a piece of moving history along the fantastic seafront of this world famous seaside resort.

Blackpool Heritage Tram

Up until 2011, the “Heritage” cars were the service fleet trams. Operating every day except Christmas Day, they travelled along the tram lines, carrying residents and visitors from A to B. A multi-million pound upgrade transformed Blackpool's tramway - the tracks were all relaid and a new, modern fleet of low-floor trams are now the service fleet.

However, the original Blackpool trams - with their distinctive 'clickety-clack' as they drive along - are much loved and as integral to Blackpool as fish and chips and the donkeys on the beach - so a core selection of trams from the original system were kept and returned to passenger carrying duties once more.

Many of these original trams are over 80 years old and have been retained and superbly restored. It's a unique experience as nowhere else in the UK can you still ride on a Heritage Tram on the line for which it was originally built.

Blackpool Heritage Trams run most weekends throughout the year, daily during most UK school holidays and, of course, operate our famous Autumn Illumination Tours where you can ride aboard one of the illuminated trams.

...................................................................................................

Trams for Hire

Along with our Heritage Buses, the trams are also available for hire to help you celebrate your special occasion.

So, whether you want to hire a tram, join us for one of our regular events or just enjoy a very special ride along Blackpool’s Promenade, we have something to offer for everyone.

FUNDRAISING APPEALS

All of the heritage Tramcars, are, by definition, old! They need tender loving care, maintenance, and in many cases restoration.

Many of them have been moved to different places, different collections, and different owners - so there are opportunities to bring some of them back home, restore them and, one by one, add them to the operational fleet.

Blackpool Heritage Trust have been fundraising for the restoration of two exciting additions to the fleet. They can't do it without your help so a BIG thank you goes to everyone who has supported these two appeals:

Paisley & District tramcar no.16 of 1904 (later Glasgow 1016)

Paisley & District Tramcar no 16

Our 'phase one' project is to restore the 4-wheel truck from this tramcar to create a rolling chassis onto which we can then rebuild the body.

To complete this we need four brand new steel tyres, at a cost of £500 each. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to the cost.

Once we have the foundations of the tram in place, work can then progress towards rebuilding the body and recreating the missing components that will allow Paisley 16 to take its place on Blackpool's Promenade within a reasonable timescale.

This is a dash panel from Paisley 16 from the later stage of its working life when it was Glasgow 1016. You can see from the state of it how large a task is ahead in restoring it to as-new condition!

Blackpool Illuminated Hovertram of 1963

The Blackpool Hovertram returned to us in September 2016 after almost a decade away and having spent periods of time in both Beith, Scotland, and Sunderland. Latterly in the ownership of the North Eastern Electrical Traction Trust (NEETT), the tram initially came back to us on a long term loan.

Blackpool Illuminated Hovertram 1963 at Rigby Road

However, NEETT have now presented us with a unique opportunity to actually purchase the Hovertram outright, which will allow it to remain as part of the Blackpool collection, in perpetuity. We feel that this is an opportunity that we should not miss, as it will reunite the entire 1960's illuminated collection under one umbrella and in their original home at Rigby Road.

NEETT have very generously agreed to accept a figure of around half of the £7000 that they have themselves invested in the tram in terms of purchase, moving and storage. We have therefore raised £3,500 to allow the famous illuminated Hovertram to stay in Blackpool, where it belongs!

Blackpool Hovertram

Again, many thanks to you all for your donations. No matter how big or small they are very much appreciated, and will help us to secure the future of the Hovertram here in Blackpool. Donors of £500 or more will be invited to come and inspect the tram themselves, and to hear first hand about our plans for its future return to use.

Make a Donation

Although these two particular appeals are now funded, if you would like to make a donation it would be so very welcome, and would go to other appeals and the ongoing work to maintain and preserve our unique transport heritage.

To donate please send a cheque payable to “Blackpool Heritage Trust” to 16 Seventh Avenue, Blackpool, FY4 2ED

Alternatively, we would very much appreciate monthly standing orders. This form of regular contribution allows us to forward plan our projects, and will help us to build on our achievements so far and deliver the world class collection of Heritage trams that we all desire to see.

Our friends and supporters at the Fylde Tramway Society have an open invite to their March meeting!

Annual Photographic Competition We are delighted to announce our Annual Photographic Competition, that will take place Thursday 1st March at 1930, at The Wings Club on Victoria Road, Cleveleys. The event will be hosted by Blackpool Transport Trust's James Millington, who will judge, follow with an update on the latest happening with the Heritage fleet, and will answer questions afterwards. Only members may enter the competition, but all are welcome to attend. We would love to see many of you there!

LuneTube, the online channel for North Lancashire, recently paid us a visit to talk 'trams' to our very own Head of Heritage, Bryan Lindop. This followed their trip to see and film the Sunderland Point Tram, a former Bradford tram body that now sits by the estuary of the River Lune close to Morecame Bay and in the shadow of the Lakeland hills. Follow their link to watch the clip . .

NEW FILM RELEASE: TRAMALOT - A FILM ABOUT HERITAGE TRAMS Ding Ding! All Aboard! After filming the Sunderland Point tram last summer, we wanted to find out more about Edwardian trams so we headed off to Blackpool for a chat with Bryan Lindop who is the Head of Heritage at Blackpool Transport. In this week's LuneTube film, Bryan talks about the Sunderland Point tram and compares its story with some of the vintage trams which are in his depot at Blackpool. Click on the image below to watch the film: Bryan's enthusiasm is infectious :)

Workshop update – Standard 147 It has been some time since we provided a workshop update and so this first report, on progress with Standard car 147, aims to put this right. Sometimes a lack of updates might lead you to believe that not a lot is happening with the Heritage Trams at the moment – however, this is far from the case! Regular followers will be aware that 147 returned to us in February last year following a 12 month operating loan to Beamish Museum. Despite initial hopes that it would be back in use in Blackpool for the 2017 season, we took the decision to treat 147 to a full repaint as it was looking rather tired after 12 years without a visit to the Paint Shop. Further investigation highlighted some areas of rot in the woodwork that would only deteriorate further without some essential conservation work, and so it was decided to keep 147 out of use until it could be accommodated in the workshops. During the summer of 2017, some preparation work was undertaken for repaint, but work on 147 (and also Boat 227) became delayed as we took the decision to prioritise the overhaul of Brush car 621 to allow it to return to use and participate in the 80th anniversary of the class in September. However, with 621 completed during the autumn, work resumed on 147 in earnest and the tram was soon back in the Paint Shop. As part of the conservation work on the tram we have taken the opportunity to replace and restore some missing or damaged features to 147. This has included sourcing a set of replacement ruby quarter light glasses for the upper and lower saloons as many of these had become damaged over the years and clear glass substituted. Our good friend Peter Watts, whose primary interests lie in the glass industry, was quick to offer to oversee the manufacture and supply of replacement glasses – which will restore a smart and uniform appearance to 147 once it returns to use. Grateful thanks are extended to Peter for his help here. As part of the conservation work it had been decided to source 'period' style lower saloon 'grab handles', provided for standees, to replace the modern plastic units installed as a matter of expediency when the tram was initially restored to use in 2002. For this we enlisted the help of Norman Bond and Glen Williams of the Ffestiniog Railway's Boston Lodge workshops, with assistance from Angie Harrington and Rod Bramley. Examination of the grab handles on sister Standard car 40 at the National Tramway Museum showed what we needed and, amazingly, Rod had in his collection an exact match which was actually removed from Sheffield Standard tram 247 when it was scrapped in 1959. This was used as the template to create a mould for the fabrication of sixteen brand new cast metal handles, and once completed these were passed to the saddlery for the leather straps to be fitted. The completed units look absolutely superb, and will complete the authentic look of 147. Further ruby glass and grab handles have also been acquired for the eventual completion of Standard 143, for which a number of missing components have recently been amassed to aid the eventual completion of this car in its original 1924 condition. With work on the external repaint still in progress at the time of writing, it is hoped to have Standard 147 back in use on Heritage Tram Tours early in the 2018 season. Our photographs show: 1: Deterioration of woodwork following 12 years use since its last workshop visit. 2: Preparation in the Paint Shop, including rotten sections cut out for replacement. 3: New ruby quarter light glasses are manufactured in France. 4: An example of one of the brand new cast metal and leather grab handles for the lower saloon. 5: A recent view of progress with the external repaint of 147.
