Fleetwood Sea Cadets

Fleetwood Sea Cadets

Fleetwood Sea Cadets is one of 400 similar youth organisations for young people – girls and boys – aged between 10 and 18.

Through regular meetings and events they learn a whole host of skills, and celebrate Britain’s maritime heritage and contribute to its future development as young people who are Sea Cadets.

Fleetwood Sea Cadets are in the middle of building a new accommodation block at their base against the seafront, not far from Rossall Point. Work started in the summer and they’re hoping it will be finished in spring 2014.

The new accommodation block will mean that they can hold more camps at the base and will be hiring it out to other youth organisations to raise funds for the base. It will hold up to 30 children with new specially designed 3 tier bunk beds. There’s also a new shower block with three new shower rooms as well.

However funds to complete this project are starting to run out as the lottery grant for £10,000 is nearly gone. If anyone can help through the donation of time, expertise, materials or cash, then please get in touch and help the Sea Cadets to finish this excellent project.

More about Fleetwood Sea Cadets

Sea Cadets take part in activities like adventure sailing and national rowing competitions using practical skills that they learn on the boating lake here at Fleetwood. They go to camp, enjoy rock climbing, and a whole host of outdoor activities. It’s all great fun and a great way to make new friends. They also have a 5 a side football team and play against other organisations and Sea Cadets, and there’s also a netball team for the girls.

All this takes place from the Sea Cadet base on Fleetwood sea front, on the corner of the Esplanade and Beach Road. As with most community groups, there’s an ongoing fundraising programme to support the running costs and maintenance of the building and the regular car boot sales are growing hugely in popularity and are a good way for the whole community to join in with the life of the Cadets.

Every month the base opens its doors and car park for the car boot sale which runs from 7.30am to 12.30. Members of the public are invited to hold a stall of their own at £8.50 for an indoor stall and £7.50 for outdoors. Up to press there are 24 regular tables – one of which is the Sea Cadets own fundraiser.

We’ve been talking to Brendan, who has been Chair of the Sea Cadets for the last twelve months, and is working hard to raise the profile of the group, get more people involved and achieve more. Brendan said,

“Pop along to one of our events and see if there’s a bargain to tickle your fancy – and if not you could just have breakfast instead. The kitchen serves hot bacon or sausage barms for just £1.30 with tea/coffee at only 50p. The bread is donated by Warburton’s in support of the fundraising efforts.”

Car boot sales have been held at the Base for some time, but in the last twelve months a number of local businesses have sponsored banners which are put up around Fleetwood the week before each event, and they have increased numbers up to a current 600 people who are counted in each time.

Brendan said “I’d like to thank Deol’s, Style Carpets, Chris Allen Garages, Home Bakery, JP Dell Funerals, Richardson’s Fish Bar, Thorougoods and John Jenkinson’s Autos – all local companies who have enabled us to put banners up which has made such a difference to the success of these events.”

The Sea Cadets are also looking forward to the opening of their new accommodation block at the back of the base, which is where visiting cadets will be able to stay when they come to events at Fleetwood. Currently, they bunk down in the classrooms, which isn’t ideal, and when the new block is finished it will also be available for other youth groups to hire. Aaron Baxter has secured £10,000 of Lottery funding to pay for the building work, which will house up to 23 people.

In summer the Cadets carried out a boat pull along the promenade, which we actually spotted at Cleveleys (above). That event raised £500 which was to the penny how much they needed to raise to pay for a new trailer for their new Trinity Boat.
