Each group is a learning co-operative of people who are semi- or completely retired.
Members share educational, creative and leisure activities. Activities are run by members for members. Local U3As offer a combination of opportunities to study, create and socialise.
In the Spring of 2011, a public meeting was held to see if there was enough demand for a U3A group to start in this area. Groundswell of opinion was positive, and as they say, the rest was history!
As of December 2011, Wyre U3A has been tremendously successful, with around 190 members attracted to the various groups. New people come along to take a look all the time, and if it carries on expanding at this rate it will outgrow the capacity of Thornton Little Theatre where the monthly gatherings are currently held!
Currently there are activity groups in Art, Books (Reading), Computers, Egyptology, English Civil War, Family History, Gardening, German Conversation, History, History of Art, Holiday Spanish, “Live” Music, Music Appreciation, Photography, Spain beyond the Costas, Travel, Unsolved Murder Cases, and Walking. New activity groups are set up when a member emerges to lead them.
A monthly newsletter is circulated to keep everyone up to date with the happenings of the activity groups, which offer a wide and varied range of things to join in with. For example, the Gardening group have been to Bents Garden Centre for a day out, the Egyptology group had a recent speaker from Lancaster University, and members from across all subjects went to on trips to Jodrell Bank and to BBC Radio Lancashire. Christmas Lunch is at Blackpool and the Fylde College and the timetable is non-stop!
The whole group meets on the second Thursday of each month, at 2.00pm in Thornton Little Theatre.
