Views Across the Water from Fleetwood

On a clear day there's a spectacular view across the River Wyre estuary and Morecambe Bay - to Lancaster, Heysham and the Lake District.

My what a view! From Fleetwood at the front of the North Euston Hotel, where the benches are and the car parking area, you can enjoy what is probably the best view on the whole Fylde Coast.

Just across the water behind the RNLI station you can see Knott End and the slipway just a short ferry ride across the water. On the hills is a patch of white buildings with a tower which is Lancaster University - you can just see it at the right of the second photo.

You'll not actually see Morecambe from here because it's tucked into the coastline in its own bay, but you can clearly see the power station at Heysham, standing tall and clear as two white buildings.

The windfarm is clearly visible on the hills as they take you round the Lake District through Grange over Sands and Ulverston.

The end of the land mass brings you to Barrow in Furness and Walney Island.

As you start to drive southwards heading in the direction of Cleveleys, the offshore windfarms start to come into view, off Barrow and Walney Island. Following the curve of the coastline, the turbines seem to change position as you actually change your angle of view!

When the tide goes out you'll see the channel to the docks more clearly defined through the sand banks and expanse of the bay. Marked with buoys and markers it's a dangerous channel to navigate for boats and certainly an area to avoid on foot - don't be lured by the seemingly large areas of sand, as they cover extremely quickly when the tide comes in.

You'll also see the remains of the Wyre Light wooden lighthouse in the bay. The RNLI take a guided walk out to it every year at the height of summer - but you should never try it alone. You can find out more about the RNLI Wreck Trek here.
