Fleetwood Festive Lights in 2019…

Fleetwood Festive Lights Lantern Parade and Switch On is THE BIG Christmas event in Fleetwood! It’s the BIG weekend of Festive Fun with fun for all the family.

Of course the 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic, so the last event was held on Saturday 16 November 2019. Here’s a message from the Festive Lights organisers:

On behalf of the Festive Lights Committee I would like to thank the people of Fleetwood who turned out for this years’ Switch on of the Fleetwood Christmas Lights. The event is getting bigger each year thanks to your support. The atmosphere was incredible with the children so excited waiting for the arrival of Santa.

The moment finally arrived. The illuminated Western Train tram made it’s way past the (new for this year) illuminated trees at Fisherman’s Walk. Santa stepped down from the tram to huge cheers and climbed into the sleigh kindly loaned by the Rotary Club for the evening and joined for the first time by elf Julie. The Parade got underway with The Carnival Queen and Retinue taking part and the Old Boys Band looking very festive with their decorated instruments. Spectacular surprises took the form of the Willow Groups’ Unicorn with stars. The schools and the crowds adding to the spectacle with their lanterns and glo-sticks.

The procession made its way down Lord Street, passing the wonderfully illuminated Pocket Park and finally arrived at the Marine Gardens where the compere/DJ Adam Discoman had been entertaining all those at the Marine Hall. The Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress of Wyre Cllr. Barry Birch and Collette Birch Wyre Councillors and Fleetwood Town Councillors were welcomed to the event and the concert got underway.

Festive Lights Christmas Concert

Local girl Nicola Hayton took to the stage to give a beautiful rendition of Mariah Carey’s ”All I Want for Christmas is You”. Then it was the turn of Charles Saer Community Primary School Choir who performed 4 songs to get everyone in a Christmassy mood. Next on stage were the Starmakers of Fleetwood Theatre Group who made their debut with a very energetic song and dance routine.

Finally, the time had come for the lucky school raffle ticket winners to find out which one of them would have their name drawn out by Santa to switch on the Christmas tree lights. That honour went to 4 year old Evelyn Smith of Shakespeare Primary School. The Christmas Concert was brought to a close with all the evenings performers taking to the stage and together with the crowds, joined in a rousing chorus of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”.

Thank you to everyone

Thank you to everyone mentioned above and the following who all contributed to making the event such a huge success:

  • Fleetwood Rotary Club marshals
  • Blackpool and Fylde Police Cadets marshals
  • Blackpool Transport and Road Traffic management
  • Steward Terry Rogers
  • GB Lec
  • Blackpool Illuminations
  • Julia Ann Robinson, Manager Marine Hall, & Techies

Join the organising team

Finally. Thank you to the Festive Lights Committee who work tirelessly throughout the year to put together this event to bring some early Christmas cheer to the town. If you would like to become a member of the Festive Lights Committee please come along to meetings. The date and time of the next meeting will be announced on the Festive Lights Facebook page.
