Plans for reopening the Fleetwood railway line have just jumped a huge step forward. It’s one of only a few schemes chosen to progress to the next stage. Pictured above: the Poulton to Fleetwood line at Thornton Cleveleys station.
Reopening the Fleetwood Railway Line
The Government made the announcement on 20 June 2022. Plans to reinstate the Poulton to Fleetwood railway line will progress to the next stage of the Restoring your Railway fund programme.
The Poulton to Fleetwood railway line is one of an initial 199 bids in the Ideas Fund round of the programme. The fabulous news is that it’s now one of just nine schemes which will receive funding to carry out further development work.
The initial business case went into government in April 2021. It outlined three potential options to reopen the line including heavy rail, light rail and a tram system. This next phase will now see a more detailed business case put forward identifying the preferred option and associated costs.
The Fylde Coast Tram Loop proposal would enable passengers to travel around the Fylde Coast, with railway interchanges at Poulton and Kirkham and Wesham.
Restoring the Poulton to Fleetwood Railway Line
In January 2020, the Government pledged £500 million for the Restoring Your Railway (RYR) Fund, to deliver on its manifesto commitment and start reopening lines and stations as part of the levelling-up agenda.
The schemes which are progressing to next stage will bring socio-economic benefits as well as the ability to reconnect and level up the community.
It’s fantastic news for Wyre and moves this much needed improvement to local transport one step closer, now that detailed plans have the green light. This plan has been bubbling away for a long time now, prior to the Government’s programme. There’s been a lot of support for it, across the board.
Restoring the rail connection from Poulton to Fleetwood is key to providing increased employment opportunities, links to further and higher education for young people, boosting Wyre’s visitor economy and for the overall regeneration of the area.
