Fleetwood Town Council asked the 175 committee to organise the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Celebrations on their behalf. Celebrating 60 years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, it was one of a number of landmark events in Fleetwood during the year.
2012 Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Day
What a lovely day! The party started at noon and went on until late. The Marine Hall had recently undergone its transformation. The exterior was newly repainted and the gardens newly landscaped, as part of the Sea Change project along the Wyre coastline. This was one of the first events held there, in an area designed for public events and performances just like this one.
It began with the “Big Lunch” at the Marine Gardens. The Big Lunch is a community picnic with participants bringing their own food. Free entertainment and attractions followed.
Rides and inflatables for the children, brass bands, folk bands, fancy dress and ‘Fleetwood’s Got Talent’ competitions plus a parade of Jubilee Queens. Local community groups were invited to have a stall at the event to either promote their activities or to raise funds for their group.
Lighting Up Time
In the evening rock bands performed in the new performance area. A Jubilee Beacon was lit on The Mount at 10.26pm by Mrs Doreen Lofthouse as part of the national celebration. The evening ended with a firework display.
The people of Fleetwood enjoyed the free event, funded by Fleetwood Town Council. Each primary school child in Fleetwood also received a Jubilee Mug as a memento.

“Fleetwood certainly knows how to party! It was wonderful to see so many people out with their picnics on a Bank Holiday Monday. All enjoying the town’s very own Diamond Jubilee celebrations in the sunshine. Thanks must go to Fleetwood Town Council for having the vision to fund a fantastic, totally free event from the rates precept.
“The Marine Gardens and the Mount provided the perfect venue and stunning backdrop for the occasion. Support from Wyre Council and Marine Hall staff, in the planning and on the day, was much appreciated.
“Brilliant entertainment was provided throughout the afternoon and evening with something for everybody. The grand finale, with the lighting of the jubilee beacon and firework display to the strains of “Land of Hope and Glory”, was truly breathtaking. Grateful thanks to all those who gave their time to take part. You were all amazing.”

And a big thanks to the people of Fleetwood who, as ever, gave their support to show what community really means. Together we created a memorable day and I’m so very proud of our town.”

- Royalettes Morris Dancers, Bulldogs Gymnastic Display

- and from 7pm: Lune Deep, Indigo Sands, Monkberry

Followed by a patriotic firework display.
