‘Landscape Projects’ were commissioned to provide the design. Then in May 2021 Wyre Council began the initial consultation for the project. Incorporating new lighting, seating and planting. There’s also space to hold occasional small events whilst keeping the existing trees and the same number of accessible parking spaces.

It’s a modern, multipurpose pocket-park and a great enhancement to one of the borough’s core historical areas. The square also complements work to improve historic buildings in the area, helping to draw residents and visitors to the town.

David Pearce from the Jacinta Trust made the kind donation of the ship’s anchor. Jacinta Trust also provided welcome funds towards the project.

Future visitors to Fleetwood Museum will also be encouraged to use the square as an access route from a proposed new entrance off Custom House Lane.

Historic England’s Heritage Action Zone scheme made the project possible. It looks to fuel economic, social and cultural recovery to a select number of high streets in the country. Historic England’s Zinnie Denby-Mann said:

“The new urban park at Custom House Square is a wonderful example of a heritage-led project which directly improves the lives of people.  This amazing space will boost well-being, bring communities together and celebrate local history.”
