History of The Mount Church

The Mount Church traces its heritage back to the Wesleyan revivals in the late 19th century. Although originally Primitive Methodist (mainly a working-class movement) the church later united with the Wesleyan church.

Mount Church is situated at the corner of Mount Road and Seabank Road, behind The Mount. Initially, the building was used as the Sunday School for St George’s Primitive Methodist Church in West Lord Street, also known as the ‘Fisherman’s Church’. Sunday School attendance was between 350 and 400 people.

The church is built in red brick and finished with sandstone reveals and dressed stone. Two brick and sandstone turrets are located on either side of a central window in a style characteristic of early twentieth century Methodist architecture. The architecture of the building complements the nearby Victorian townhouses on Mount Road, adding significant architectural interest to this part of Fleetwood.

Within the chapel, the original wood panelling around the balcony and pulpit area is still in evidence. An organ was installed in 1933. Several memorial plaques are evidence of the important contribution the church has made to the heritage of Fleetwood over the years.

Now home to Emmanuel Church (a church founded in 1933 when a 500-seat tent was erected in the centre of Fleetwood for a six-week gospel tent crusade) and known as Emmanuel @ The Mount. Various organisations helped to make The Mount Church well known in the 20th century. A couple of them were The Men’s Fireside Fellowship which, post war, offered adult education in its widest sense. And the Band of Hope, a temperance organisation.
