History of The Mount

The Mount Pavilion is to be found at the top of The Mount, a small sand hill, located on Fleetwood Esplanade. The current Pavilion dates from 1902 built by the Fleetwood Prefabrication Building Company. It replaced a former pavilion lost in a storm.

It was created in 1836 and Decimus Burton used it as a centre point of his design for Fleetwood, commissioned by landowner Sir Peter Hesketh Fleetwood. The Pavilion had a viewing balcony at first floor level and sheltered seating at ground floor level. From the late 1800s the old Pavilion was used as a weather station. Sending information on wind speed, air pressure, rainfall, and hours of sunshine to the metrological office for inclusion in weather forecasting. Local man, Esau Monks, had a tearoom on the raised terrace next to the building.

In 1919 local businessman, Isaac Spencer, presented a clock to the town in memory of those who lost their lives in the Great War. The clock, made by Potts of Leeds, was installed in the Pavilion and is now a registered WW1 War Memorial. It can still be heard striking every quarter of an hour. Between 2015 and 2022 the Pavilion, along with the rest of the grounds and cobbled wall, was restored to its former glory. The restoration took place with the help of local businesswoman and benefactress Mrs Doreen Lofthouse and a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

Reasons for plaque award

The current Pavilion, erected in 1902, stands on top of The Mount and houses a WWI memorial clock. The Mount is the centre point of Decimus Burton’s design for Fleetwood.
