History of the Lower Light

The Lower Lighthouse was designed in 1839 by Decimus Burton and Capt. H. M. Denham and built by John Tomkinson. Burton’s design reflects the Pharos Lighthouse in Alexandria, one of the ancient wonders of the world.

Situated on the seafront near Ferry Beach, it’s an unusual 45ft high neoclassical white sandstone structure with a square base and tower. Fleetwood is unusual in that it has three lighthouses (Pharos, Lower (Beach) and Wyre Lighthouses). They work together to allow boats to navigate a safe channel into the harbour.

The lighthouse was first illuminated on 1 December 1840 by town gas, supported by an oil lamp as reserve, but was eventually converted to electricity. The lamp had a single silvered parabolic reflector focusing the flame which was magnified through a Freznel Lens in front. The light was shielded and only visible from the direction of the Wyre Light and the channel.

The Lower Lighthouse is visible from up to 9 nautical miles. As vessels entered Morecambe Bay, they turned around Wyre Light into the mouth of Wyre channel. Lining up the Pharos and Lower lighthouses one above the other would guide them safely clear of sandbanks. There is a height difference of approximately 15 metres between the two lights to prevent them blurring into one in bad weather.

One of a unique trio of lighthouses. Lower Lighthouse along with the Pharos Lighthouse and the Wyre Light brought mariners safely into harbour, rather than warning them of danger.
